Guttate psoriasisis actually a very rare form of psoriasis looking like small, salmon-pink coloured dots on the skin. It appears generally at the start of the strep throat infection and can affect both children and adults under thirty years of age.
This disease is named after the word “gutta”, and it usually develops in the form of rash on the arms, legs and torso.
A person may develop this disease once or it can also recur because of other infection or bouts of strep. Like other forms of psoriasis, this type of psoriasis can even run in families and a person may acquire it as hereditary sickness. This psoriasis accounts for about two percent of all the psoriasis cases that exist.
Apart from the strep throat infection, the guttate kind of psoriasis also affects people who may have just recovered from chicken pox, cold, different skin infections and are experiencing excess fatigue and stress.
The primary cause of guttate psoriasis may be due to the immune system reaction provoked by a streptococcal infection or any other kind of infection. As we know, the immune system makes white blood cells, which protects the body from harmful attacks of foreign invaders causing infection. In case of psoriasis, the T cells, a type of white blood cells, abnormally triggers some inflammation in the skin surface and causes production of excess skin cells.
Almost eighty percent of the patients suffering from this disease have the above-mentioned streptococcal infection, which is mostly in the form of tonsillopharyngitis. In some cases, many viral infections like chicken pox, cold, rubella, and roseola may also causes the outbreak of this form of psoriasis.
This guttate psoriasis can be easily diagnosed because of its visible, characteristic rashes, which are shaped like tear drops. Although no additional kinds of tests are required but people having this disease should visit the doctor’s chamber to swab their throats in order to check whether they carry any kind of strep bacteria even if they are not suffering from sore throat.
An episode relating to this psoriasis may occur in people who have been previously diagnosed with the plaque psoriasis and it may last for several weeks, and at times, even for months. Thus, the test is required to see whether any patient is a carrier of strep or not.

• Small sized dots in pink or red in colour occur suddenly usually
two to three weeks after the streptococcal infection.
• These drops usually itch.
• These outbreaks generally occur in the arms, legs and sometimes spread to the face and ears.
Treatment of Guttate Psoriasis
Individuals, who have guttate psoriasis, undergo antibiotic treatment in order to treat the strep throat. This is important because if the strep throat is not treated, it may lead to rheumatic fever, which can be life threatening. It also weakens the heart and causes various kinds of kidney damage. The rash of this psoriasis is normally treated with steroid creams and thick and emollient moisturizer for skin. This relieves the itching greatly.
Under majority of the cases, guttate psoriasis goes away in few weeks without any treatment, but if still it lingers, immediate medical attention is required.Tags: guttate psoriasis, health, infection, psoriasis, skin, skin disorders, white blood cell
