The “tree that defeated time” .
Ginkgo biloba is the oldest known tree in the world : it exists from over 200 million years. Its name comes from the Japanese Gin yyo , which means ” duck’s foot ” (thanks to the shape of the leaf) , or perhaps the Chinese word Yin Kuo – ” silver apricot ” (light fruit) . The use of Ginkgo biloba is clearly documented for over 5000 years in Chinese texts as the “Book of Metamorphosis .” The spines of Ginkgo biloba were used to drill the abscess and consumed as a decoction to reduce swelling. But it is the leaves and seeds of this tree which quickly attracted the attention of researchers worldwide . More than 300 studies have been done the last 30 years , with evidence showing the benefits of Ginkgo biloba for the whole human body.
What are the active molecules of Ginkgo biloba?
Ginkgo biloba leaves contain organic molecules, including flavonoids, flavones , organic acids , terpenes (called ” ginkgolides “) and bilobalide . These active ingredients work synergistically and provide three important effects on the human body :
– it significantly improves blood circulation;
– protection of the cells against free radicals;
– slowing of blood platelet aggregation and clogging(coagulation).
Extracts of Ginkgo biloba used in most clinical trials are standardized to 24 % or 25% glucoflavonoïdes and 6% terpene lactones.
How is it working?
After taking Ginkgo , arterial vasodilatation is observed , but also the veins and capillaries. The fluidity of blood and blood circulation is improved. And the amount of glucose sent to the brain increases . This promotes the time required for the storage and interpretation of visual information . Increased oxygen to the brain prevents dizziness and headaches.
On the other hand , the antioxidant molecules Ginkgo biloba protect brain tissue against free radicals. This would help to curb significantly the death of neurons (nerve cells ) and thus memory loss . Then all the main cognitive functions ( alertness , attention, reasoning , language ) are improved .
In addition , Ginkgo biloba prevents the formation of blood platelets within the walls of the arteries to maintain and preserve their maximum flexibility. This phenomenon significantly relieve circulation problems such as Raynaud’s syndrome ( cold feet and hands, tingling ) and acrocyanosis (blue – violet color of the fingers and toes). Paradoxically, this effect increases with age, Ginkgo supplements are more effective in the elderly .
Because the effects of Ginkgo biloba may take some time to fully manifest , treatment usually lasts two to three months or longer . It is not uncommon that the optimal effect is reached after six months. Ginkgo biloba is an extremely safe plant , there are no known side effects.Tags: Ginkgo biloba, health, health benefits, herbs, memory
